"As the VP of Professional Development for the Albany, NY IIBA chapter, I arranged and attended my first class with Billie in December of 2011. Since then I have helped arrange many other sessions instructed by her or Kelley on a variety of topics. I have never been disappointed in their ability to provide an engaging learning environment.
The difficulty I find with most technical books is their ability to be informative and keep my attention. Drawing from their experience as both practitioners and as instructors, Billie and Kelley have written a book that takes you into their classroom. They present a topic, discuss its applications and considerations for use, and share an "In Real Life..." experience to reinforce it. These shared experiences really made the book for me."

Mastering Business Analysis Standard Practices Seven Steps to the Next Level of Competency Business Analysis Professional Development Kelley Bruns Billie Johnson Books Reviews
- I have had the pleasure of being in Business Analysis (BA) classes with both Kelley Bruns and Billie Johnson when I was beginning my BA career. When I heard they were writing a book on BA standard practices, I was very excited to know that I would have good information available in one place. This book is divided into seven steps with good detail, a summary of key points and extensive references for each chapter. They include how the BA works with Agile as well as with the traditional Waterfall environment.
This book will be valuable as a study reference for both the PMI® and IIBA® Business Analysis certifications. I will definitely use it as a study reference when I pursue my BA certification. And this book will be added to my business library. - Having taught many different business analysis courses, I appreciate the authors’ complete and detailed treatment of the many diverse techniques available for business analysts. I would use this as a textbook for a longer class and recommend it as a reference for shorter ones.
Whereas many of the guides or bodies of knowledge simply reference techniques, this book puts them in context, detailing where and why to use each. Don't let its density scare you. Read the table of contents, skim the whole book cover-to-cover, go back and read Chapter 1, then select the sections that address your needs. Find new ways to approach your analysis work. As you encounter new situations, go back to the book and you'll likely find a technique or model to fit.
For all of its detail it is non-methodological the techniques as presented are applicable to traditional waterfall as well as agile, incremental development approaches. Where a particular modeling technique can be drawn with different notations, the authors present each equally, recognizing that many analysts need to be able to read and use artifacts from a variety of sources. - I am so excited about this book! The first chapter is foundational to understanding our standard practices and the importance of mastery. They even suggest 7 steps for getting the most out the book. The seven steps are clearly laid out with everything you need to know to be successful in each one. Between them, Kelly & Billie, have experience in so many industries they've included some of the best technique instruction and illustrations I've ever seen in one place! Let alone the Real Life examples they've included throughout.
My favorite part of the book is the Business Analysis Journey Map!! It illustrates the step by step iterative process of the business analysis journey. This map/model covers every business analysis perspective and the techniques to use to support the initiative factors presented to the BA. I've been doing business analysis over 20 years and I can't think of a better way to become a trusted advisor, then by following these 7 steps and the techniques that go with them. I have some training to do with my team of analysts, and I will definitely be using some of this material and adding this as recommended reading! Thank you Ladies! - As the VP of Professional Development for the Albany, NY IIBA chapter, I arranged and attended my first class with Billie in December of 2011. Rather than merely explaining how to perform BA techniques, this book explains how to perform business analysis. Kelley and Billie prescribe a game-changing BA framework which BA tasks to perform, when to perform them, and how to apply them to any BA perspective (business architecture, agile, business intelligence, etc.). Most importantly, Kelley and Billie use their real-world successes and failures to further explain the value this framework will bring to your organization. Not only do I have my own copy, but my management is purchasing two copies of this book to facilitate the implementation of this framework into our BA practice!
