Soft Skills for the New Journalist Colleen Steffen 9781138593152 Books Reviews
- “Soft Skills for the New Young Journalist†is the least stuffy journalism book I’ve ever read. It’s fresh! It introduces a plan on how to approach stories, sources, writing and work life. The concepts are woven together and repeated throughout the book. Bravo! Reinforcement is key. Author Colleen Steffen’s advice and writing also are never dull. She is a wordsmith. Her book is an entertaining adventure that raises awareness about what it is like to be a working journalist and survive as a writer.
I personally know and have worked with Colleen for years – first, when she was a reporter and in-newsroom internship supervisor and second, when she was one of my colleagues at Ball State University. The book is a compilation of who she is – an accomplished writer and mentor who is older and wiser than her years and who is on-call and always ready to solve problems or celebrate achievements over a cup of coffee. She is sweet and kind, and smart and tough.
What Colleen shares in her book are those up-close and personal conversations profs wish they could have in class, but don’t have the time to do so in a 50-minute class that meets twice a week. If I weren’t retired from teaching, I would use her book in the sourcing (research and interviewing) course I used to teach. If I were still an internship coordinator, which I did for more than 22 years, I’d have the students in the professional development course read it.
College students who read this book will say it slays.
